A Brief History of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church

Little Mountain, South Carolina

For more than a century, Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church has been serving the Lord in Little Mountain and Newberry County!  Holy Trinity was organized on January 1, 1891, when thirty-four charter members met in Miss Kate Miller’s millinery shop in Little Mountain.  By October 3rd of the same year, a wooden church building was completed on the highest point within the town limits on property given by Mr. Noah Boland.

In 1917, the beautiful brick sanctuary in which the congregation worships today was built.  The magnificent stained glass windows were installed 1953.  The parish building was completed in 1962, to accommodate the growing ministry needs of the congregation.

From the original 34 charter members, Holy Trinity has grown to become an active congregation of more than 530 baptize members.  As the congregation has grown through the years, a number of organizations have developed to meet the many diverse needs of the church and community.  Among these are the Lutheran Men in Mission, the Women of the ELCA of Holy Trinity, Teens in Christ, and The Happy Mountaineers (Senior Citizens).

Blessed with an abundance of young children, the church provides children’s ministries which include Holy Trinity Preschool and Mother’s Morning Out Program, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School.  Many other opportunities are provided for children to become involved in worship and the life of the church.

In addition to the church programs listed above, Holy Trinity also actively supports community organizations as well.  These include Cub Scouts, Webelos, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.  Each summer, Holy Trinity helps sponsor a week-long Lutheridge Day Camp with sister congregations Mt. Tabor, Macedonia, and Grace Lutheran Churches for elementary age children.  This unique experience includes Bible Study, arts and crafts, recreation, music, worship, outings, and swimming.

With a strong love for the Lord, the members of Holy Trinity strive to make a difference in our county, state, nation, and world.  The congregation has long been a strong supporter of the Lutheran Church’s World Hunger Appeal.  In previous years, the congregation assisted in the sponsorship of refugee families.  Presently members are involved in such community ministries and projects as Interfaith Community Service (ICS), Manna House, American Red Cross Blood Drives, Clothing Drives and Meals On Wheels.  Holy Trinity also provides annual financial support for Lutheran Family Services of the Carolinas.  Through the years, the congregation has supported pastors working in foreign mission fields.  Presently Holy Trinity provides support for The Reverend Judy McGuire, a missionary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  This support is in addition to regular benevolence support to the greater church.

Since it’s founding, Holy Trinity has been served by fourteen pastors.  The present pastor is The Reverend Karl F. Suhr, Jr.  The congregation has also provided six sons and one daughter for service as Lutheran pastors.  Among the most recent are The Reverend James Franklin Shealy, The Reverend James W. Wicker, and the Reverend Susan Crowell.  Two other members, Mrs. James B. Griffith and Mrs. Sara B. Frey, also served as full-time lay workers in the Lutheran Church.

With a strong appreciation of her heritage, Holy Trinity is preparing to continue to strengthen and expand ministries to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those in the community today.  In recent years, the congregation has purchased two adjoining parcels of property for expansion to meet growing needs and future opportunities for ministry in the Lord’s Name.  In 2009, the new Fellowship Hall was completed.

Perhaps the seal of the congregational best describes its mission.  Set in the center is the Cross with the following words underneath – Preaching, Teaching, Serving in His Name.  This is what the people of Holy Trinity faithfully strive to do as they live out the faith of their Baptismal covenant.  With Christ at the center of their lives and church, they strive to preach, teach and serve in His Name!
