In January 1984 the SCATT Group (singles and couples in their twenties and thirties) requested council to appoint a committee to study the feasibility of having a preschool program at Holy Trinity. On February 5, 1984 eight people were appointed by council to begin this study.
By the summer of 1984 questionnaires had been sent to many of the churches in our area to see if there was enough interest in a preschool. The committee met with the Department of Social Services, Newberry County Health Department and the Fire Department. The committee contracted and visited a number of established preschools in the Columbia area and met with the Director of a Christian Kindergarten.
The committee found that no significant changes needed to be made to existing facilities for the preschool. We also had ample response from the community to establish a preschool.
On October 7, 1984 the Preschool Study Committee met with council to answer any questions they might have concerning the start-up of a preschool. Council voted to accept the recommendation of the study committee and voted that the committee’s recommendation be voted on at the congregational meeting on December 2, 1984. The congregation voted 163 to 20 in favor of starting a preschool. On April 14, 1985 council approved Brenda Summer as our first Director/Teacher. When we started in September 1985 we had 14 children enrolled. Since we were on a very limited budget we had volunteers who would come in and help Brenda when needed.
During the first year through generous donations we were able to purchase some playground equipment, get the play area fenced in, have small tables made for the classrooms, and buy some educational items for the classroom. We had many books and toys donated. It was reported in the June 1986 minutes that the preschool had a very successful first year.
Our preschool has touched the lives of so many children with the love of God. Through our very dedicated director, teachers, staff and committee members we say to the children in our community “we care” and “God cares”.
Using our facilities during the week for the preschool is a good stewardship of what God has given us. Just think our classrooms would be empty except for one hour on Sunday mornings and think of how many opportunities we would miss to show children and their parents all over the community the love of God.
Without a doubt, the preschool is the most vibrant and visible ministry of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. It is a way in which we fill our mission as a Christian Church.
From Matthew 19:14 “LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME, AND DO NOT HINDER THEM: FOR TO SUCH BELONGS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.”
